Avant-propos

La médecine (du latin : medicina, qui signifie « art de guérir, remède, potion1 ») est la science et la pratique (l'art) étudiant l'organisation du corps humain (anatomie humaine), son fonctionnement normal (physiologie), et cherchant à préserver la santé (physique et/ou mentale) par le traitement (thérapie) et la prévention (prophylaxie) des pathologies.

La médecine contemporaine utilise les soins de santé, la recherche et les technologies biomédicales pour diagnostiquer et traiter les blessures et les maladies, habituellement à travers la prescription de médicaments, la chirurgie ou d'autres formes de thérapies. Depuis plusieurs décennies, le soulagement de la souffrance s'est également imposé comme un objectif médical à travers des solutions chimiques mais également par la relation médecin-patient.

Introduction :

     In medicine, as in any other life sciences discipline, research should start by raising a question (hypothesis) to solve a problem. Then the scientist should select the most appropriated method(s) to answer the question and solve the dilemma.

The obtained intermediate and final results may answer the question or may raise additional or new questions. It closes the loop of research and discovery.

Quite often, the development of new methods offers the opportunity to raise new questions and sometimes, although not well accepted, the application of new methods without initial and predefined questions offers new data that can be used to raise many valid interrogations. It is like entering the research circle at a different entry point.

For example, sequencing genomes has currently provides numerous valuable data and can be considered to be the application of new methods without predetermined questions – non hypothesis driven research. In fact, many “omic” experiments, such as genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic studies, can be classified into this category. Even without well-defined medically driven
hypotheses, the spectacular and exponential development of the “omic science” has been an impressive driving force for large-scale method development. Currently, scientists have the range of many powerful tools available to answer very well-defined, pertinent, and difficult hypothesis driven research.

Medical terminology, an illustrated guide

  

Organization and Approach  

Medical Terminology: An Illustrated Guide takes a stepwise approach to learning the language of medical ter-  minology. Part 1 describes how medical terms are built, and Part 2 introduces body structure, disease, and  treatment. These chapters should be studied before proceeding to Part 3, which describes each of the body  systems. Individual chapters also build on knowledge in stages, with Key Terms sections listing those terms  most commonly used and specialized terms included in a later section entitled Supplementary Terms. The  latter terms may be studied according to time available and student needs. 

Each chapter opens with a chapter outline and a list of student objectives—goals to be accomplished by the completion of the chapter. In Part 3, the chapters begin with an overview of the normal structure and function of the system under study, followed by a list of key terms with definitions (the roots used in the ac- companying chapter exercises are included in these definitions). Word parts related to each topic are then presented and illustrated, along with exercises on the new material. 

 

Next, there is an overview of clinical in- formation pertaining to the system, also followed by a list of key terms with definitions. Many chapters con-  tain displays that unify and simplify material on specific topics. New to this edition is information on complementary and alternative medicine and special interest boxes  with information on word derivations and usage.
