The original Textbook of In Vitro Fertilization and Assisted Reproduction was conceived after the first Bourn Hall (then also associated with the Hallam Medical Centre) foundation course in September 1989. The idea to produce a book owes a great deal to delegates on courses held regularly at Bourn Hall, initially designed by Bob Edwards, to teach the practice and principles of in vitro fertilization. They expressed a wish to have a textbook, so they would have to carry less paper in the form of protocols and reprints on the latest advances in assisted conception! Its success was a tribute to David Bloomer, of Parthenon Publishing, who prophesied correctly that it would be an immediate success. He also encouraged Peter to produce a second and now a third edition. The original co-editor, Paul Rainsbury, also deserves deepest thanks for collaborating so well in the initial
